The Smart watch – the next computer?

I have been using my new smart watch for about two weeks now, now firstly I would like to make note that the definition of a smart watch is that it must look like and feel like a watch first, I do not consider watches that look like mini smartphones attached to a band on your arm a watch, they are mini smartphones attached to your wrist.

So in having said that I went with a Pebble steel, not only do I think they look great, it feels great also. First of all it is a watch.

The app works great allowing for simplistic usage in changing the watch face, and it is very easy to upload and download other apps. While its usage is very limited, as in it has no colour screen no touchscreen, no camera. Who cares? It works.

I mean do I really want to walk around like inspector gadget talking into my watch? Or point my watch at things taking pictures like it’s a death ray from Lost in space? Or really try to use a 2 inch touch screen? I think the key to staying a virgin till the age of 40 would involve someone using a smart watch in this way. It simply has no street credit.

This smart watch has freed me from my phone, I no longer am a slave to my phone, and it can stay in my pocket, at my desk, even in my bag. I am actually free! I do not have to slavishly check my mobile every 5 minutes.

If I am talking to someone and my phone rings, I can simply look at my wrist quickly and see who is calling, then decide on whether I want to interrupt the supplier, customer, colleague, friend or family member I am talking to, and if I receive a text message I can quickly get the gist of the message and even give a basic quick answer such as yes, no or ok by pressing some buttons quickly on my wrist.

Having experienced this, I have become a believer in wearable technologies as long as the technology is not a gimmick and it still stays true to its original usage parameters, while I think it will never really be the next mobile computer,  Rolex, Casio, Tag, Seiko and all the others better lift their game or they will go the way of Nokia.
