Snapchat has revealed it has handed over 92% of requests for information from governments.

Some 403 government requests have come asking Snapchat to send them user information. 375 of which have come from the US government while 28 have come from overseas.

All the requests came in a six month period and have been revealed following Snapchat’s first ever company transparency report.

The company say they complied with 92% of the requests which were made in the form of subpoenas and search warrants.

They don’t say what user information they handed over but do say in the smallprint the info could include usernames, email addresses and phone numbers.

Snapchat have been in trouble in the past when people found out they were saving data after one of the big selling points of the app was that the snaps are deleted after time runs out.

However that has since been cleared up after the company said they “retain logs of previous messages sent and received” which contains meta-data about messages, not the content of them – so they were telling the truth.

There is still loads no-one really knows about the kind of private info Snapchat is handing over to governments but the transparency reports are a good start to ensuring its users continue to trust the app.
